Hamann Porsche Cayenne Cyclone

Flashily-dressed giant

The Porsche Cayenne has been a raving succes at the cost of indivualism to their owners. Several German tuning houses have already constructed body kits for the Cayenne, and today Hamann released their latest, and arguably, most extravagant package for the SUV.

Hamann gives the Cayenne a wide body aerodynamic component kit consisting of a new front spoiler with two integrated LED-daytime running lights and fog lamps, extended wheel arches for a more imposing look, roof spoiler and rear-facing panel with diffuser.

The Cayenne has been lowered by 35mm through a lowering system with pneumatic shock absorption. Hamann has either 22 inch (Anniversary II) or 23 inch (Edition Race) light alloy wheels on offer. With their Hamann sport exhaust system with 4-pipe sports competition silencer, the Laupheim modifiers even tune the sound of the SUV, with some extra horsepower as a nice bonus.

To stress that the interior can be upgraded to whatever the customer wants is proven in this demo car. The show car is furnished with Twotone Snake full leather upholstery, aluminium foot rest, pearl velours floor mats and 36-piece carbon coated interior-set.

The HAMANN Porsche Cayenne “Cyclone”

* Extensive wide body aerodynamic component kit “Cyclone” designed by HAMANN
* HAMANN-Daytime running lights for better safety
* 22“ and 23“ alloy wheels ANNIVERSARY II and EDITION RACE available

The Porsche Cayenne enjoys great popularity with the customers. No wonder, since the noble SUV combines power and design. HAMANN MOTORSPORT in Laupheim offers various modifications for Porsche Cayenne to refine it and to make it more individual. The most obvious alteration ist the shapely and mighty envelopment. Fitted with the HAMANN wide body-kit the Cayenne becomes the “Cyclone”!

A true HAMANN without aerodynamical conversion is inconceivable. Even more so, when the vehicle in question is a Power SUV like the Cayenne. Brandnew is the HAMANN wide body-kit, which make the Cayenne appear even more imposing. Fitted with this kit, the Cayenne may call itself „Cyclone“.

The front view presents itself in an unmistakable optical characteristic. The specialists in Laupheim designed a front spoiler with two integrated LED-daytime running lights and fog lamps each. By offering the LED daytime running lights HAMANN makes a valuable safety contribution. Three high performance-LEDs and 250 reflectors lead to a better signal aspect. Their lucent white signal light is highly visible even at daytime and warns oncoming traffic fast and efficiently, which in case of emergency leads to better reaction time. Further advantage: LEDs beat normal H7-bulbs in terms of durability because they can be used 30 times longer. Additionally, they lead to less fuel consumption which is a result of their better energy-efficiency.

But even with switched off LED´s the „Cyclone“ is a flashily-dressed giant. The front and rear extended wheel arches give the Cayenne an absolutely powerful. The back also demonstrates individual power: roof spoiler and rear-facing panel with integrated diffuser and cut-out for the HAMANN 4-pipe sports competition silencer. The tail lights with four individual light fixtures are real eye-catchers.

Corresponding to the performance and in order to provide suitable optical characteristics, HAMANN offers a lowering system for all vehicles with pneumatic shock absorption. The vehicle is thus lowered in front and rear by approx. 35 millimetres. Of course, the vehicle thus reacts distinctly more accurately to the steering system and offers pure driving pleasure.

The specifically developed HAMANN brake system for the front axle with slotted and ventilated brake discs sized 380 x 34 millimetres, aluminium disc chamber, sports brake linings and steelflex brake pipes. The eight-piston fixed calliper disc brakes in silver complete the system and apply a powerful grip. At the rear axle an four-piston brake system with slotted and ventilated brake discs sized 380x28mm plus the same hardware as above support the system working at the front.

Optimal contact with the road is guaranteed by the HAMANN light-alloy wheels ANNIVERSARY II for 22 inch tyres. The multi-part aluminium wheel in multi-spoke design is available in the dimensions 10.5 J x 22 inches for front and rear axle. If you prefer it a size larger, you can also have the size 11.5 J x 22 inches for the rear axle, but then only in combination with the flared wheel arches. The silver ANNIVERSARY II with high gloss polished rim flange is fitted with tyres in 295/30 ZR 22 (front) and 315/30 ZR 22 (rear).

The appearance of the three-piece, ultra light forged wheels EDITION RACE in crossing spoke design and black wheel spider is identified through its nine main spokes double-attached, branching and continually double-crossing towards the outside rim. Its stirring design becomes particularly noticeable through Titan studs. The high-polished flange is icing on the cake to complete this luxurious look. The wheel EDITION RACE comes in an impressive 11x23” with tyres 315/25 R23.

HAMANN equips the “Cyclone” with high performance tires from technology partners HANKOOK.

Sound tuning – with some additional horse power produced at the same time – is accomplished by HAMANN with its sports exhaust systems. Sports headers and sports metal catalytic converters including connecting pipes for the HAMANN 4-pipe-sports rear silencer made from stainless steel, evoke thoughts of a raging cyclone closing in!

As in all HAMANN models, there are no limits to the customer’s requirements in respect of the passenger compartment. Can’t be done? – that’s not true! An absolute must is the pedal set including aluminium foot rest. Of course, the exclusive pearl velours floor mats with the silver, embroidered HAMANN logo are also indispensable. A three spoke airbag-equipped sports steering wheel connects the driver even better to his vehicle. Additional motorsports atmosphere provides the 36-piece carbon coated interior-set. Passengers preferably never want to get out of the „Cyclone“, when HAMANN fits out the passenger compartment with its „Twotone Snake“ full leather equipment. There really isn´t much room left for more precious interior! As always, HAMANN applies the rule „nothing is impossible“. Every Cayenne is customized according to each customer’s specific requests, for example with extensive multimedia conversions.

Stunt Driver Terry Grant set New World Record

New world records and the Renault Twingo are two things you would never normally associate together, but enter renowned stunt driver Terry Grant and the impossible becomes reality. At the Autosport International Show in the UK, the famous driver managed to spin (or drift or J turn) a Twingo GT through a gap just 18cm more than the length of the car.

This feat is even more amazing when you take into account the crucial measurement of the diagonal size of the car which left just 4cm for Terry to spin through the barriers beating the previous record by 1.5cm and had Terry lauding the Twingo GT's capabilities.

Terry Grant has broken 16 world records in all and you can see more information about his 12 year stunt driving career at his website here.

Press Release

Renowned stunt driver Terry Grant has set a new Guinness World Record in the feisty Renault Twingo. The audience at the Live Action Arena of the Autosport International Show saw the famous driver spin a Twingo GT through a gap just 18 centimetres more than the length of the car!

The 100hp Twingo GT is just the ticket for punching above its weight in the urban environment although Terry’s method of nipping through gaps is best left to the professionals! The ‘J-turn’ involves reversing at speed, spinning the car around through 180ยบ and then driving off in the opposite direction.

The sell-out crowd in the Live Action arena at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre saw Terry reverse the Twingo and spin it through barriers that were just 378 centimetres apart – only 18 centimetres more than the length of the car. The crucial measurement for Terry was the diagonal size of the Twingo. At 370 centimetres, this left Terry with just four centimetres gap between the barriers!

The Live Action arena saw 12 performances of the stunt over the four days of the show. In each spectacular demonstration, the gap between the barriers was reduced, breaking the previous World Record each time. This culminated in beating the previous record by over one and a half metres!

Terry said “For this record, the car needs great agility, visibility and pinpoint accuracy. The Twingo has it in spades! Best of all, despite up to six shows each day and numerous practice runs, it was bomb-proof! You couldn't drive many cars home after that sort of punishment!”

Terry Grant has been performing stunts around the world for over 12 years and is widely regarded as one of the greatest performers in the business. This is his 16th World Record.

Ferrari New 2009 Dino Renderings

In honor of the founder's son Alfredino “Dino” Ferrari who died of muscular dystrophy in 1956, the Dino brand name represented mid-engine rear-wheel-drive models with less than 12 cylinders which were produced by Ferrari between 1968 and 1976. Groomed to be the successor of Ferrari, Dino was credited for designing the first Ferrari built V6 engine which was first used in motorsports and then later produced in the Fiat Dino in 1966 to help Ferrari homologate the engine for use in Formula 2 racing. Then in 1968 Ferrari produced their own Dino 206 which was their first mid-engined vehicle. The Dino 206 is widely considered one of the best Ferrari's ever made.

Now Ferrari is reviving the Dino name with their most “affordable” entry level 400hp V8 model which is expected to open Ferrari up to a whole new market. The Dino is rumored to be produced at the Maserati plant in Modena and is expected to start at EUR 100,000 with a potential 4000 units per year which doubles Ferrari's current production. The Dino is expected for 2009 launch with a spider version following.

Despite the Italian manufacturer constantly denying they are working on a successor to the Ferrari Dino, there is no denying the fact they are working on some kind of baby Ferrari under a different name, possibly the GT420 or 470.

The new baby Ferrari will be based on a shortened platform of the Maserati GranTurismo which it will share with the Maserati GT Cabriolet, our sources also claim it will be in convertible form with a folding hardtop and the debut is likely to be at this years Paris Motor Show.

Mercedes Set to Take Over McLaren F1 Team?

2007 was arguably one of the most controversial seasons in McLaren F1 history capped with no drivers championship, being thrown out of the constructors championship and a $100 million fine. Far from acceptable for engine partner Mercedes-Benz who are reported to be negotiating to take a majority stake in the British team, a deal that would likely signal the end of Ron Dennis as team boss.

According the German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport, Mercedes want to have more control over the British team to eradicate errors made during the drivers title run in and are not happy with the crisis management at the height of the spying scandal. Negotiations are reported to have been ongoing since October last year.

Does this mean we will hear the German national anthem when/if we see Lewis Hamilton or Heikki Kovalainen takes the chequered flag this year?

VW Polo set to Grace U.S. Shores?

Many experts in the automotive industry (like WCF) see the demand for smaller cars increasing over the next few years with fuel costs continuing to rise leading the world's biggest automotive market to show its strongest growth in this segment last year (compared to other segments). With this in mind Volkswagen are considering to bring the Polo to the United States, making it the smallest model they have ever made available on these shores.

Later this week Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn will meet with VW's 600 dealers and ask “Do you need the VW Polo?”, and this could lead to the production version of the VW Concept Space Up making it over as well.

With the success of recent small European models such as the BMW 1 Series or even the Smart forTwo, it is clear the auto makers see a clear potential. What do you think? Let us know by commenting below.

Volkswagen Announce New Routan Minivan

Volkswagen is stepping up efforts to create a larger market share in the United States, we have already heard they are considering bringing the Polo over, now the German manufacturer has announced an all new minivan which will be named Routan will debut at the Chicago Motor Show next month.

Routan is a name that indicates a bond between America and Volkswagen, just in case that bond doesn't strike you straight away, here is the explanation. The first part of the word is taken from the English word “route” with the end coming from “an” which we see at the end of VW's European vans – Touran and Sharan.

The Routan is a joint development with Chrysler LLC and will be over 5 metres in length seating up to 7 people. We expect it to be based on the same platform as the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, with power likely to come from Chrysler's 4.0-liter V-6 and possibly the 3.8-liter V-6.

Production will commence this summer at Chrysler's Canadian factory in Ontario with the first models to hit dealers in the fall.

Hyundai drops Terracan in UK line-up

A few weeks ago, Hyundai UK finally decided to drop the ageing and slow-selling Terracan but that leaves an empty gap for a large SUV to replace the Terracan.

Its likely Hyundai will import the VeraCruz and re-name it "iX55" for the European market. 5000 units will be produced for Europe with UK pricing expected to start from around £25,000 rising to £30,000 for the fully loaded model. Power will come from a 3.0 V6 diesel developing 240bhp.

Hyundai VeraCruz comes to Europe

UPDATE:

The ix55 will start from 45,000 euros or nearly £34,500. The CUV won't be powered by a 3.0 V6 diesel but a 2.2 CRD engine used in the European Santa Fe which chuck outs 191g of carbon dioxide per km which makes me think, will UK owners have to fork out £25/$50 for the congestion charge in order to enter London? Only time will tell when it arrives....

Acura Announces Clean Diesel Engine for 2009

Turbocharged i-DTEC engine at NAIAS

The new CAFE standards have caused quite a stir in the USA, in both a good and bad sense. Its a good thing that US cars need to become more fuel efficient with less emissions, and one way of reaching this goal is clean diesel.

Diesel is of course notoriously known for its polluting, but over the past years the cleaning filters have been researched and developed at an amazing pace. Acura has not been sitting still either and has announced at the Detroit Motor Show that the marque will offer a clean diesel turbocharged i-DTEC engine by 2009.

The first car to be powered by the new engine has not yet been announced.

Mazda CX-9

Like the Mazda CX-7 presented earlier this year, the CX-9 is a clean break from the traditional boxy SUVs crowding the US market. Engineered with Mazda’s “Soul of a Sportscar” signature, CX-9 deftly blends sporty driving spirit with seven-passenger SUV practicality. Standing out from existing crossover SUVs – vehicles that deliver SUV practicality with a passenger car driving experience – the Mazda CX-9 is the insightful solution not only to the modern family’s complex need but also to the enthusiast driver’s desires. And of course Zoom-Zoom is standard.

The North American market continues to play a leading role in Mazda Motor Corporation’s global future and financial health,” emphasizes Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. “The all-new CX-7 and CX-9 were engineered specifically for North America to help us fulfill ambitious goals. The CX-9 represents everything a Mazda SUV should be, offering ample power, striking appearance, fun-to-drive vitality, precision build quality and unexpected versatility. While other vehicles in this category focus only on what’s behind the drivers seat for the family, we have engineered a unique solution that is equally as exciting for the driver.”

Mazda CX-9 targets young couples and modern families. These outwardly-focused families haven’t lost their desire for high-intensity leisure activities, learning experiences and social interaction. It is also ideal for couples with grown children who pursue an active lifestyle. Mazda CX-9 is specifically designed to make these complex pursuits as easy and as pleasurable as possible.

SPACE TO STRETCH

The Mazda CX-9 rides on one of the longest wheelbases in the segment, providing easy access to its three-row seating. There’s ample room for adults in every position and sufficient cargo space to accommodate modern American families. Under the sleek exterior is an interior that will impress demanding customers with its space, utility, versatility, and premium features.

To ease accommodations for all drivers, the driver’s seat and steering column move quickly and easily over a long range of adjustment. The 60-40 split second row not only carries three in comfort, it also offers approximately five-inches of fore-and-aft slide travel and a reclining backrest. In the 50-50-split third row, the seating position and leg room are both class-leading in numbers and real comfort. Entry to the third row is easy, with nearly 26 inches of access space between the folded second-row seat and the C-pillar. Even with the third row occupied, the CX-9 provides 17.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity, eclipsing many large sedan trunks. Both second- and third-row seats fold flat to allow additional storage all the way up to the back of the front seats.

Extra thought is invested in small details, such as how the CX-9’s seat releases are configured. For example, releasing the second row seat in order to enter the third row requires only one simple hand motion to unlatch the seat and move it forward. Likewise, a clever strap attached behind the third row seat’s backrest serves as both a release for folding the seat and a means of pulling it back erect again.

EXTERIOR STYLING A PRIORITY

Many mid-sized crossover SUVs strive for the utilitarian look. The Mazda CX-9, however, is designed to evoke a strong pride of ownership. Without sacrificing versatility or efficiency, the CX-9 strives for the sophisticated appearance of a vehicle costing two to three times as much. Its smooth and flowing silhouette, prominent wheels and tires, muscular fenders and steeply angled windshield and backlight give the CX-9 a dramatic-but-refined look.

CX-9’s front end is unmistakably Mazda, with its elegantly sculpted sporty five-point grille and wide, bold bumper. A horizontal streak of chrome floats on the front grille bar, giving a distinctive and high quality feel. Side windows form a flowing, open and modern greenhouse, allowing clear vision from all seating positions. The unique trapezoid chrome exhaust pipe accentuates the fine detail put into the design.

INTERIOR STYLING STANDS OUT

Once inside the CX-9, the driver is greeted by a neatly organized combination of cylindrical shapes and blacked-out instruments on a T-shaped instrument panel. Brightly edged gauges with metal-look trim and indirect blue illumination set a cool mood. Indirect lighting also is embedded in the front and rear door trim and ceiling for a warm glow. Horizontal elements in areas such as the center panel, door trim and seat design intersect with vertical accents to create the same harmony present in fine furniture.

Interior craftsmanship and attention to detail is visible everywhere. Soft trim is elegantly configured and constructed of top-quality materials and seats have an inviting yet sporty look and feel appropriate to this type of vehicle. The dash panel houses large, clearly marked entertainment and climate controls. Delicate stitching and the metallic look of the floating door trim-grips reveal the designer’s fine eye for detail.

ENERGETIC AND REFINED POWERTRAIN

At the heart of every Mazda lies a spirited engine. The CX-9 is powered by a new 3.5-liter V-6 with a preliminary rating of 250-horsepower. Advanced features include dual-overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, a high compression ratio and electronic throttle control. While six-speed automatic transmissions have until now been exclusive to premium-priced SUVs, the CX-9 provides that desirable feature as standard equipment. The direct benefits to Mazda customers are optimum acceleration and passing performance, coupled with excellent highway fuel efficiency.

Drive is either through the front wheels or via Mazda’s advanced Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive system. On all-wheel-drive models, various sensors signal control modules to automatically apportion torque to those wheels most able to provide solid traction. A computer-controlled coupling, connected with the rear differential, automatically adjusts the torque distribution, allowing up to 50-percent of the drive power to be sent to the rear wheels, depending on traction conditions. This all-wheel drive system has been especially well received in MAZDASPEED6 and CX-7 applications.

SURE-FOOTED CHASSIS & BODY

The stiff unibody of the Mazda CX-9 provides a sound foundation for a poised ride and agile handling. Computer-aided-engineering analysis was used to optimize this structure, delivering high torsional and bending rigidity with minimal weight. Extra laser welds and adhesive weld bonding have been applied in critical areas for enhanced stiffness. Damping sheets applied to floor areas and acoustic foam filler added to body cavities assure a quiet, high quality cabin environment.

In front, the perimeter frame mounted to the unibody through six rubber isolators supports the powertrain, the engine-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion power steering, and a low friction strut-type suspension system using coil springs. The multilink rear suspension consists of one trailing arm and two lateral locating members per side. To minimize cargo-compartment intrusion and permit a wider load space, the rear coil spring is positioned between the lower lateral member and the unibody. A damper is located as close as possible to each rear wheel to provide excellent motion control with minimal friction. Anti-roll bars at each end maximize agility and control during assertive driving.

Twenty-inch, V-rated, low-profile radial tires (P245/50R-20) are standard equipment on the top Grand Touring model while Sports and Touring editions roll on P245/60R-18 tires. As a result, CX-9 looks and feels unusually nimble for its size and is the clear class leader for driving pleasure.

SAFETY WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

The Mazda CX-9’s safety features are highlighted by an advanced Roll Stability Control (RSC) system that uses both body-roll rate and wheel speed sensors to determine when corrective action is necessary. A momentary torque reduction, combined with an automatic brake application, assists in restoring the CX-9 to an even keel.

Four-wheel disc ventilated brakes include an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) to prevent lockup during emergency use. When excessive wheel slippage is detected, a Traction Control System (TCS) automatically reduces driveline torque to help restore traction. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) reduces driveline torque and automatically applies one or more brakes to minimize under- or over-steer during emergency maneuvers.

Additional protection is provided by sensor-activated side-curtain airbags which extend from the first to the third row. These inflatable restraints deploy in the event of a lateral collision or a rollover to reduce the likelihood of injury and limb or head ejection. Inflation is maintained for approximately six seconds for maximum effectiveness, although the only way these systems work properly is when used in combination with seatbelts. Pretensioner devices automatically remove slack from the belt system immediately after a moderate or greater frontal collision and load limiters are incorporated to provide some give as the occupant moves forward. The CX-9’s front headrests incorporate new design features which are designed primarily to reduce neck injuries during rear impacts.

CX-9’s robust unibody uses the Mazda Advanced Impact-Energy Distribution and Absorption System to help protect its cabin from deformation harm in the event of a collision. A combination of large-section members, some made from high-tensile steel, envelope the passenger compartment to absorb impact energy while guarding against intrusion.

TRIM AND ENTERTAINMENT FEATURES

CX-9 is offered in three trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring.

More detail on specific model content will be available closer to launch, but standard features on all trims include air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, cruise control, and six airbags. To help avoid accidents, all CX-9s are fitted as standard with DSC, RSC and ABS with brakeforce distribution. An optionally available power-operated lift gate provides one-touch opening and closing access to the cargo hold.

Features available in models and packages include leather interior trim, power adjustment for front seats, high intensity discharge headlamps with automatic-on, rain-sensing wipers, mirror-mounted turn indicators and driver’s-seat memory.
